I used the Windows Media Player one, that silverlight thing did not work properly. WM 6.5 GUI is a bit 'rounded' and more 'glas'. That's it? It's a bit thin.

This is a tremendous presentation, and a real eye-opener in showing how RIA services are delivering n-tier development but making it really easy. For example you don't need to handle callbacks for async calls; just bind the collection and it will notify the UI when the data has been returned! Genius. cool stuff :) but what about exsisting projects? most of the time we're continuing work on things that already exsist, perhhaps prototyping an extension or planning for vNext it would be really really useful if you could apply or open up sketchflow on an exsisting app and have the exsisting relations between pages layed out. i realise thats a challenge but olny getting the usercontrols would be great too i'd really like to see more info on channel 9 (or something, blogs whatever) on how schetch flow works, how it identifies pages and elements and so forth and how you can use it with exsisting apps :)

Although the buzz at Mix was clearly about Silverlight and Blend - especially SketchFlow - Doug's sesison was a real gem. In fact i would say it is likely one of the most important sessions. This was one of the most clear demonstrations of the value, power and potential of "M". M is all about creating domain specific languages and then using those DSLs to create and manipulate resources. The three pane MURL view that shows a DSL on the left pane, it's transform to M in the middle pane and the transform from M to data elements on the right pane (which can then be mapped into CLR, XML or an RDB) makes it all clear. If this goes where I think it will then I predict that we'll see a lot more about M and DSLs the fall at PDC. At Mix next year we'll see M and the DSLs as the glue that unifies everything from the design space (Sketchflow) all the way down to the programming model and the database.

When I first saw that there were only 2 effects added to SL 3 (DropShadow and Blur) I was a little disappointed. However Seema shows in this presentation how to write you own pixel shader, or even better use the large amount of effects available from the wpf effects library (http://wpffx.codeplex.com/) within Silverlight. I would recommend to leave out the history part (asp classic, ..) - does not really interest me if i want to see decide between webforms and mvc (10 debatable minutes). You are repeating several times that the web form example is simple nothing special (why repeat that statement). Talking about interactivity i may suggest to ask the audience about their previous knowledge to decide how long you stay on the basic topics (for example i would assume that over 90% knew what a querystring is and know how to get a value from it). You could even poll the audience if you can rush through the basic explanation of WebForms (another 5 to 10 minutes saved). On around 39 minutes in the video you say that you can controll more with mvc. But i did no see you gave an example or an explanation about that. On minute 43 you start to talk about the controller and repeat again a lot of statements. On minute 53 up to minute 59 you name some considerations which can help to decide between WebForms and MVC. So basically it leaves me with 6 minutes that might help. Kudos how you handled the guy who wanted to talk about css-styles versus themes. Greetings

I agree with Ian, this is a really cool presentation for building LoB (Line-Of-Business) apps in the browser. Offline support is very important especially considering Google Gears also has its roots in providing support for offline capabilities. Personally, I think Microsoft has to think seriously about offline, especially for mobile/cell phones, and they are doing a good job so far. Does anybody know when Microsoft will demo Silverlight on Windows Mobile? I think this will be huge!

Following up to the audience question at 49:30 or so, the Virtual Earth 3D map control for WPF (PC) and Surface is called InfoStrat.VE and is available at: http://virtualearthwpf.codeplex.com The only reason they said it isn't "compatible" with Concierge is because Concierge requires an older version of Virtual Earth but the InfoStrat.VE control uses the latest version of Virtual Earth. You can't install two versions side-by-side, so Surface demos that need Concierge have to use the older version, at least until they update it.

Great Session! I am using live mesh and when I looked into the live framework, I did not install the client only because I was going to lose the mesh sync. Now with the new update it is possible to have them side by side, which is great! Time to try it out :). I love the fact how it supports multiple formats and it is not limited to the MS stack. Keep up the amazing work!

The guy who asks the question about Dispatcher Timer or One frame Storyboard I think you should consider the static class Composition there is an event called TargetRendering that fires every frame. This class is not new to silverlight, it been here since version 2. So there you go, you are doing frame based animation, it gets even more beautiful when you using F# to program silverlight application. Any function can be added and remove when you want. You need to see this yourself I cannot express how beautiful it is. The key to know silverlight is about knowing the classes, what they do and how to use them it is NOT about knowing Expression Blend or Zaml. If you would like to know more about using F# to program and run silverlight applications just like C# then respond to this comment

A few thinks i would like to give you as feedback. minute 11:07 insert snippet is a cool feature but for the table it took about 3 seconds - that is to slow (i assume this will be better once VS 2010 is out of beta) 12:03 CTRL K + CTRL X to insert snippet Is it possible to use type find ahead with this: CK + CX + u would directly jump to the tags that start with "u" Great way to use jQuery as a tool - why waste time and money when there is already a great library out there. Concentrate on improving the things we love and can be more productive with (for example see the great products of telerik). Please talk to the vs.studio guys to improve the speed of VS and some others things (code folding and syntax highlighting is sometimes messed up / buggy) Thanks

Great presentation! One observes that only Chinese people are complaining about the man's English. His English is indeed quite good for a native Chinese speaker. He wields an excellent command of English grammar and colloquialism, which are usually weak points for native Chinese speakers. Obviously Dr. Zheng has resided and worked in the West previously.

Hi Adron, Yes, I was at the PDXUX meeting... I'm scheduled to speak at the one next month (April), I believe. Probably something along the lines of the content here, but maybe a deeper dive. @orane - I did mention there were three timers - storyboards, DispatcherTimer, and I could not recall the TargetRendering option. My understanding of it is that it is less desirable because it's not controllable, but if you're having good luck with it, then keep at it! Thanks, Jeff

@Leonid Silverlight for mobile has been demonstrated many times, I attended a couple sessions on this at past conferences. You should be able to find info and some video on the internet. As for offline support for data access; IdeaBlade and their Devforce EF/Silverlight support offline data access and sync when reconnected.

Many MS presenters I have seen use firefox which is quite ironic. :) I can't wait to explore SL3/RIA more. few questions ... 1. IS it possible to see dirty flags in master datagrid? I would then know how many records I have changed. Same with the new Employee record or delete employee record. (hopefully different kind of flag for these two). Is that dirty bit display cutomizable? 2. What is the best suggestion to arrange folders/projects in the Silverlight solution? especially folder structure in web project when the project is big. 3. I would also like to see examples of(MVP/MVVM) patterns or any recommended pattern for Silverlight and how it works wih SL 3/RIA. 4. Conflict resolution - any example/demo? New web deployment tools are good. But I am afraid we won't be able to use them in most scenarios where we practice continuous integration, when we need keeping existing web application and its data but instead upload or delete from the server only modified files and update only modified portion of database schema. Redeploying the whole application in these scenarios is not acceptable. Anyways, it’s a good session. New version of Visual Studio 2010 seems very promising.

Good stuff. I saw an online demo of the VS 2010's drop-and-drag data sourcing with Beth Massi (Microsoft's VB team I think she is) on dnrtv.com recently, similar to what you've demonstrated here. Excellent feature. It is amazing what you folks at Microsoft keep adding to these products--and how quickly these products are evolving.

Nice job. From watching many of these MIX09 videos (which I have very much enjoyed seeing), it seems that quite a few people demonstrated similar new features/functions/tools in VS2010, SL3, and Blend3. I hope that you folks will continue to do that, because each of you have different jobs and each person demonstrates and explains things differently. And all of them combined really provides a good understanding of things.

Well, as always, the "Sketch-Flow" concept still has to prove itself in a real software project setting. The "application flow" view looks interesting. It looks like that the software designer can model the overall process the software shall support. As I see it, a sketch can be assigned to each process step. How sophisticated this modeling capability really is remains to be seen. Is it suitable to show this "application flow" process to clients or real end-user for feedback? Can I import these processes to "Sketch-Flow"/Blend (e.g. from Visio)? So I really have dozen of more questions. As someone who still uses Visio for sketching and modeling, I am really looking forward to try out Sketch-Flow in Blend.

Hi Laurent That was a great presentation. A good N-Tier architecture mixing different user interface technologies and explaining the differences and potential issues among them. Also, you improvised very well using a Lambda expression when you had to tackle the issue about the event handler that wasn't generated automatically. Impressive! Well done! I'm having a lot of trouble watching this, from the very begining the sound is really out of sync with the video. He's talking about expectations, and then as he moves onto another topic, I see him type "expectations" and do the jazz hands long after he's talked about them. (I've got the latest Silverlight and its the same with IE7 and FF3.) I really want to watch this, but I just can't without going totally crazy. Does anyone have any ideas please? Thanks, Bill.

To the implicit style manager question, implicit style manager is an intermediate solution that allows users to be able to do application skinning until Silverlight supports implicit styling (which isn't in SL3, but is coming). It's designed to work as similar to the WPF styling model as possible, as that's likely to be the way it works in Silverlight, so you should be fine using ISM now and will have an easy upgrade path to platform-supported implicit styling and skinning in the future :)

In case anyone's wondering, at the end of the video, regarding the question about caching; it doesn't add a cache-header to the JS because it wasn't built in release mode. If the site is built in release mode then the ScriptManager does proper cache control of JS files.

The title implies that Pablo would address the core concerns about the Entity Framework. Instead, he gives a demo that reinforces them. First concern: EF doesn't support iterative development. Pablo generates SQL scripts from the model, which is a one-shot deal. When the model changes, does EF generate change scripts? Second concern: We have no control over the SQL that EF generates. Pablo shows that we can edit the SQL create scripts, but makes no mention of the generated SQL query. Third concern: We cannot mock EF itself. Pablo writes code using the Repository pattern that can be mocked, but does not indicate how this could help us test our models or queries themselves.

I've just installed SilverLight 1 and I'm looking for a demo or really something that will demonstrate how I'll be able to use it. I'm a Mac owner. Also, I see an ad for Stuffit, which I've had for several years and never have seen anything that will discuss just what & how I can use this platform! Awesome presentation.. cut right to the code and made me laugh a bunch of times. When MVC was first previewed, I looked at it like, "This is just going to be a pain to develop with -- it's adding complexity & rules to my simple web apps" and it took until now to discover what MVC is all about and discovered that what I thought originally was just not accurate. Your presentation will show anyone who watches it how great MVC is and how it's very simple and logical to use. I definitely see MVC as the future of how web apps should be developed. One immediate win is how easy it makes using jQuery to make AJAX calls over traditional web apps. It presents a logical structure to your project files, and instead of calling some data web service through AJAX, you can hit a controller file that's specific to the type of data you're working with. Great presentation, keep it up.

This demo doesn't do Oslo vision justice. Hand-crafted HTTP request tools are plentiful, testing and diag tools do this, and there are a number of simple parsing tools this could have been used to do this quick-n-easy. It's worth noting Oslo is (somewhat, TBD) a general-purpose platform upon which these kinds of tools can be built. Per Doug, "Create a database for it". Why the database in *all* cases? I don't see hard-coding this to a database as standing the test of time. Many DSL problems are not best handled via repository-backed scenarios. Oslo's still a good thing, but future demos need to dig up real-world problems that aren't really resolved already via simple tools.

Too many technologies being published all over and many, many choices to keep up with the ever changing technologies at Microsoft. I think there are too many smart people at Microsoft trying to outdo each other. Why not bundle and produce a simple integrated solution for a unified Windows and Web development tool? I said tool not tools. Just keep the internals covered up and just drive like a car. I don't need to be a mechanic. I love the KISS principle. I was a geek, became a manager, business owner and grew up after 20 years in the business and finally understood what it means to have a life. I still love programming and do the technical development but I see the crazy multiplication of options that Microsoft is creating for the client. Just give me a simple integrated windows and web platform. I want to have fun and provide solutions! If I have the time to dig more deeply into the technology then will do that, but my client wants results NOW! I just got a big project and the client's IT department is pushing for Flex 3 to keep it simple. I guess they don't have enough IT people to keep up with the plethora of options presented by Microsoft. And I am in the middle of it!

Stephen, Around minute 33 you claim that a URL like /VideoGallery/Custom/1 is more SEO friendly than an alternative (let's say /ShowVideo.aspx?category=Customer&id=1 ). I have to disagree. Search engines today can deal with querystrings just fine. The folder-format URL is a bit cleaner looking for a human, and is certainly much closer to a REST-ful API format, but it has no more context for a search engine than the querystring-based URL does. What *would* be better for SEO would be if the URL were something like /Videos/Dog_Playing_Piano or even /Videos/Dog_Playing_Piano/1 if need be. The key is that the keywords of the page are embedded in the URL, since that tends to boost SEO ranking. Great talk, by the way, just nitpicking :).

brandon, I think that the speaker's message here is that IE8 pass 100% of the CSS 2.1 tests contributed to W3C....while other browsers (including Firefox, Safari or Chrome...) are just 75-85%. I agree with you that there will never be a 100% std compliant browser, by definition. At least in this case I appreciate (finally) MS efforts to move and lead in that direction with IE8...

Sorry Nanny, if you want to compare "real world" apps that I've seen (the horror, the horror), Silverlight 3 is a pretty viable framework. We have several clients on board, in design phase and SL3 is our target tech. We were looking at Adobe AIR, but SL3 out of browser lets us leverage the client's teams and our firms .NET training (which between development and maintenance is the real story and the real world).

Nothing new. Great designers have nothing to do with depression. Buxton just want to entertain the audience. And microsoft now in Design. They'll be always behind. The company is buying good products, or sometimes just stealing them. There are no great examples of microsoft design. They can talk, but i don't see anything greater then other leading companies (adobe, apple)

People really do love to bitch. God I love humans. Personally I hate anyone who is passionate about anything that doesn't have to do with space exploration and reaching the pinnacle of human potential (i.e. super powers) Design, as a whole, is a very shallow topic, Humans haven't earned the right to delve into such trivialities. I'm into Graphic design, motion graphics, web design, classical art and I shudder every time I see some website talking about how the guy lovesssss design, it's his life, bla bla etc, yeah right, so why does your site look like crap to me.. just a little venting, this keynote was great.

I can see this application being used for meetings with clients on an interactive whiteboard. That way you wouldn't even need to mess around with a laptop keyboard, mouse, etc. There are some exciting features here and even though it's only in the Microsoft world of technologies, that won't matter at this stage of production because the end web site can use whatever means is necessary--these are early prototypes.

Just made some test, it's found that several tips he mentioned do not work on Firefox3.5. for example, local vars are not faster than global vars in Firefox and document.getElementById('xxx') seems to be cached in Firefox so it could to be put into a loop.

OMG! I was very disappointed that I was not able to watch this video by telnet'ing to port 80. Usability my eye! This is as bad a YouTube, Flickr and the Hampster Dance. I understand this video was given at a Microsoft conference where Silverlight was a main highlight. I also understand that these videos are made available to non-attendees without fee or registration. Most conferences don't make free videos available to non-attendees, but none of this matters!!! Web content should be available in whatever form I choose to view it in. For example, in addition to using telnet to browse the web, I sometimes submerge my monitor under water and hook up a strobe light. Poor UX web design results in me having daily seizures. Please eliminate the need for plug-ins and make this web site and video telnet 80 compatible. P.S. Please make more free stuff available.

Silverlight's obvious try to compete with Flash Platform is a bit pathetic, don't you think? As a machead it really disturbs to have such a player running on your browser as it provides you with the pop-ups, confirmation messages, player expires (!) etc. It took me 10 minutes to want to uninstall it, which appears a tough one on a Mac, even so, it's doable. Take a look at the solution: How to uninstall Silverlight.

I am looking to do a webcast with similar presentaion that contains a video window and a powerpoint/demo PC) window. I was able to get two seperate streams (presenter video and PPT/demo video). However, the two videos are independent of each other. For the replay, i like to manipulate and control two streams by one player. I am not ready for VC-1 format, so therefore, I need to be able to do this with Windows Media 9 Series. Any idea? Thanks and much appreciated. --RG

Very Nice. In the video Christian says that when you run the project that Blend creates a SketchFlow player file that can be copied to the web sever to allow stake holders to view the prototype remotely. What files need to be copied to deploy SketchFlow prototype to the web server? Is there a built-in deployment feature in the plans for Blend such as the one available for Expression Web?

Two questions: 1. At 18 minutes into the video, Brad auto-generates the NorthwindDomainService code, and at 31 minutes, he adds hand-scripted code into the generated file. This is bad. Could this have been done using partial classes? 2. Could the data validation have been done by making the domain class implement IDataErrorInfo rather than using DataAnnotation attributes?

I reckon his team's strive to compete platforms like wordpress. I second his thoughts on the importance of features like easiness to configure, to extend a framework. The .NET platform was always a step in front of the java world in simplicity, but with his new way of doing things in place it is even starting to being easier than php frameworks! One minor point of criticism though: I don't really like the way he was talking about architecture as a bad thing to do to get yourself lagging behind usability / real client requirements. I think his way of doing things is also a way of architecture for certain! Good coding practices is also part of good software architecture.

I am trying to walk through the demo with the released version of SL3 and RIA, but I ran into some snags. One, in the video, you call the LoadEmployees() method on the context object to load date into the DataGrid (see video at 22:00), but in my application, there is not code gen LoadEmployees method. Could this be something that changed since this video was published? How does one load the data on the client side now?

When I try to use the DomainDataSource nothing is displayed in my data grid, though if I go away from the DomainDataSource and use the context to set my data grid itemsource from my xaml.vb file it seems to work fine. I would really prefer to use the DomainDataSource. Has anyone else had similiar problems and if so can you tell me how you have resolved the problem? Thanks.

Shawn, Without looking at your code (or knowing how you wired up the controls), I can only speculate as to the cuase of the issue. However, from initial experience, if you don't use the "QueryName" property on your DomainDataSource control, it won't automatically load the data. Here is a "gotcha" for you just in case, the value of the "QueryName" must the name of one of your query methods you defined on the Web side. I *think* you can declare query methods on the client-side code, but I have not researched that as of yet.

Why can't MS keep IE competitive with other browsers with regards to JavaScript performance. Absolutely exceptional. I used this as a quick start into getting SketchFlow (didn't know a thing about it) up, running and building a prototype for a project I'm already heavily involved with. This will be revolutionary for me, as I am a veteran developer and have found it difficult to fully / properly merge the design side of WPF it into my head. I keep winding up acting like a developer and coding things that I -shouldn't-. So I think SketchFlow will help me tremendously in this regard as well :)

Re: Emerson, Yes that is true. It appears they only included a very minimal amount of behaviors in the release. I can only speculate as to why. Perhaps the behavior code wasn't up to standards. Or maybe they want to force or encourage the community to provide them. Even if it's one, both, or none of those reasons, it is bad they've done this, since there would be many designers that don't know anything about programming and have no way of personally resolving this issue, which means they can't use the product to do what it's intended to do. Allow them to quickly -and easily- mock up ideas that are interactive in a way closely matching what they have in their head. The official community source for behaviors should grow (hopefully!) over time. I haven't looked into incorporating any of them yet as I'm too busy back on track with my current project that doesn't involve SketchFlow, but take a look at the following and also roam the base Behaviors section for other potentially useful implementations: http://gallery.expression.microsoft.com/en-us/DragDropBehavior

Creating my on example based on this, it works until I try to go to page 3. The activity control shows activity to theserver, but only the first 20 records are again returned. Do I need to adjust my Entity Query to except to data page I want to return? thanks prussell

Somebody needs to bitch slap everyone of you who has taken part in destroying the ability of others to literally see and use the software in the Expression Suite. The ridiculous imposition of the all-black/grey no-color ultra-low contrast UI is not a matter of aesthetics it is a matter of literally imposing visual impairment; a state of unreadability due to the indisputable fact that both CRT and LCD monitors of various brands and sizes do not and in most cases cannot render a readable UI as ideal as you have mistakenly surmised. I mean really, perpetuating this error in judgement for these past several years has gone on long enough and remains one great big WTF? When are you people going to conduct yourselves humanely, announce the error will be corrected, make the neccessary corrections and then continue to move forward to enjoy the accolades which otherwise are so well deserved for your otherwise brilliant and innovative genius that remains compromised by a poorly conceived idea rationalized and perpetuated by arrogant denial?
